Edward M. Shapiro passed away peacefully early on the morning of January 7th at the age of 91, after a short stay at the Elliot Hospital where he once served on the Board of Directors. Edward had a rich and varied life from the US Army (E5), as the VP and then President of Southern New Hampshire University (the former New Hampshire College), as a member of the Manchester Selective Service board, as a developer of homes in Southern NH, and as a board member at the Public Service of NH. As a very active member of the Manchester Community, Edward also served on the board of the Derryfield School, among other local institutions. In his later years, Ed found great fulfillment working in growth and innovation for CB Sullivan & Company and then for Sullivan Beauty up through the week that he passed. Ed cherished his relationships with the Sullivan family as well as with his incredible neighbors.
At SNHU/NHC, Edward led the transformation of a school with less than 96 day students and no degree granting status to a 10,000+ student university with multiple campuses and with innovative undergraduate and graduate degree programs. He also advocated and initiated diversity, building one of the first handicap-accessible campuses in the U.S and recruiting students of color. He initiated and developed the international student programs and spent significant time overseas recruiting students from around the globe. Edward held several honorary doctorate degrees.
Edward is survived by his sister Ann R. Shapiro of New York City, by his children, Harry A.B. Shapiro, Elisabeth K. Shapiro (and her husband Jeffrey Kirkeeng), Sharon E. Shapiro and by his grandson, Eli Kirkeeng.
A memorial service for Edward will be held at 11:00 am on Sunday, January 19th in the banquet hall at SNHU, 2500 North River Road, Manchester, NH 03106. A webcast will be available at https://www.youtube.com/live/lLYqjMT1BgM.
