A. Kenneth Hesselberg, 87, died June 8, 2004, at his home in Pleasant Hills, Pa, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Brockton, Mass, June 11, 1916, he was the son of Arthur and Gertrude (Noonan) Hesselberg. He grew up in Manchester, NH and had been a resident of the Pittsburgh, Pa area most of his life. He had been a winter resident of Hobe Sound, FL since 1979.
He graduated from Manchester West High School in 1934 and from St. Anselm College, Manchester, NH in 1938. He then served seven years in the US Marine Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of commissioned warrant officer. He had been stationed in Iceland, New Zealand, Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands, and Guam.
After the war, he taught at Maine Central Institute, Pittsfield, ME. He received his master's degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1948, and then transferred to Catholic University in Washington, D.C. where he received his Ph.D. in political science.
Dr. Hesselberg began teaching at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA, in 1952. He retired from there in 1979 after serving many years as head of the political science department.
He was predeceased by his wife, Doris (Boisvert) Hesselberg, and a brother, Daniel J. Hesselberg.
Family members include a sister in-law, Rita Hesselberg of Portsmouth, NH; two nieces, Kathleen H. Goldman of Rye, NH, and Michelle E. Small of Medfield, MA; three nephews, David K. Metivier of Fort Worth, TX, Marc D. Metivier of Hooksett, NH, and Denis J. Metivier, of Manchester, NH; several grand nieces and grand nephews.
Private services were held in Manchester, NH. Burial, with full military honors, was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Manchester, NH.
