Agnes Augusta Hayes

Agnes Augusta Hayes, 82, of Manchester, died unexpectedly on September 19, 2018, at her residence.
Born in Hooksett, she was the daughter of Arthur J. and Josephine P. (Field) Hayes.
Agnes was an educator caring and nurturing youth all of her life until retiring in 1996. She earned a BS from Mt. St. Mary College, Hooksett and an MS from Rivier College, Nashua. Her postgraduate studies were at Ball State University, IN and was NSF recipient at Bridgewater State College, MA. Agnes was NSF recipient in 1985 & 1986 at Simmons College, MA, and in 1989 was recipient of NSF from Cold Springs Harbor, NY on DNA. In 1990-92 Agnes was recipient of FIPSE Grant from BU School of Medicine, and in 1992, was selected for MIT Science and Engineering Program for middle and high school teachers.
Agnes taught in the Diocese of NH; was a biology teacher at Alvirne High School, Merrimack High School, and Plymouth Carver High School, Plymouth, MA; and was a science teacher in the East Bridgewater school system, MA. In 1981, she received the National Assoc. of Biology Teachers Outstanding Biology Teachers Award for NH. In 1983 she was admitted into Alpha Delta Kappa, Alpha Chapter. In 1984 she received MA Science Teacher of Plymouth County Excellence Award and in 1987, Professional Honor Award from Plymouth Carver Educational Assoc. In 1990, Agnes received the Science State Educator Award from MA Assoc. of Science Teachers, and she served on the MAST as Plymouth County Director Assoc. of Biology Teachers Convention in Boston, MA. She attended national and state conventions where she presented workshops, and in 1993, was program chair for the National Assoc. of Biology Teachers Convention in Boston, MA.
In retirement, Agnes enjoyed traveling and exploring the beauty and wonderment of many national parks with her brother, Alex in America, Canada and in Europe. She took up gardening and designed beautiful flower gardens. She enjoyed meeting new people, made friends easily, and reached out to be helpful to the neighbors. Agnes was thankful for the kindness of others who helped her in these last months of life, especially the Eucharist Ministers of St. Catherine of Siena Church who visited her and provided the Holy Eucharist when she was no longer able to travel.
Family includes three sisters, Christina F. Jacob, formerly of Bedford, Julia A. Hayes of Kittery, ME, and Virginia Rasch of Lady Lake, FL; one brother, Dan T. Hayes of Margate, FL; and 38 nieces and nephews from the states of, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Washington, Minnesota, Mississippi, Alabama, and Vancouver, Canada. She was predeceased by two sisters, Elizabeth M. Fischer, and Patricia A. Duffy; seven brothers, Arthur, Ralph, Edward, Vincent, Alexander, Donald, and Joseph Hayes

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, September 28, 2018 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 225 Hemlock St., Manchester. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
