He was born in Brookfield, NH, December 30, 1916 the second of 14 children of Arthur J. and Josephine P. (Field) Hayes. He lived in Hooksett for many years and had been a Manchester resident the past 30 years.
Mr. Hayes served in the US Navy during World War II in the Philippines as an aviation mechanic mate 3rd class. After the war he became a skilled artisan bricklayer and plasterer.
He was an avid lover of nature and supported the National Parks. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, canoeing, travel and exploring the world of books. In later years, when his health failed, he was content with making puzzles, walking the mall and an occasional outing.
Mr. Hayes was a member of the Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen, the National Wildlife Federation, and the National Rifle Association. In addition he was a 57-year member of the American Legion Post 28 in Suncook, NH.
Family members include three brothers, Donald A. Hayes of Concord, Joseph H. Hayes of Manchester, and Dan T. Hayes of Margate, FL; four sisters, Christina F. Jacob of Bedford, Agnes A. Hayes of Manchester, Julia Hayes of York Beach, ME, and Virginia Rasch of Lady Lake, FL; 37 nieces & nephews from the states of NH, Vermont, Washington, Minnesota, Mississippi, and Alabama, and the children of his loving wife, Dan, Denis and Joanne Dalpra.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lillian DalPra, in 1984; four brothers, Arthur, Ralph, Edward, and Vincent; and two sisters, Elizabeth M. Fischer, and Patricia C. Duffy.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday February 28, 2008 in St. Catherine Church. Burial was in the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, where a committal service was held Monday March 3, 2008.
