Alfred “Al” Sapienza, Jr. of Manchester, died August 17, 2023 at the age of 90.
He was born in Manchester on April 2, 1933, the son of Alfred and Argentila (Portinari) Sapienza. Al was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish.
He was a member of the American Legion Sweeney Post and the Knights of Columbus. Al served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1973 and retired as a math teacher from Southside Junior High School in 1997.
For 25 years, Al was a member of Kairos, a program to rehabilitate inmates and create a Christian environment behind the prison walls. He was state chairman for seven years and a member of the National Executive Board for six years. He traveled around much of the country and also went to England to train other volunteers.
In his early working years he was vice president of the Retail Clerks Union. He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his family and going to lunch with his retired teacher friends. On annual 4th of July parties he enjoyed cooking his famous fried dough for his family and friends by the pool.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Patricia A. (Phelan) Sapienza in 2018 and by his brother and sister-in-law, Dominic and Monique Sapienza.
Alfred is survived by five children, Linda Sapienza of Hampton and Anthony Sapienza and his wife, Shirley, Phillip Sapienza and his wife, Pamela, Thomas Sapienza and his wife, Nancy, and Edward Sapienza and his wife, Andrea, all of Manchester; seven grandchildren, Angelo and his wife, Kristin, Briana and her husband, John, Gina, Alfred, Dominic, Kayleigh and her husband, Ryan, and Angelina; five great grandchildren, Vincenzo, Benjamin, Robert James, Johnny and Dominic; two siblings, Richard Sapienza and his wife, Pamela, of Grove City, OH and Phyllis Kline of Salisbury, NY and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Manchester Kidney Center and Michelle Irwin for her loving care that enabled Al to remain in the house he loved.
SERVICES: Calling hours are Wednesday (8/23) from 3 to 5:30 p.m. followed immediately at 5:30 p.m. by a funeral ceremony, all at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., Manchester. A cemetery committal service is Thursday (8/24) at 10 a.m. at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
