Alice R. Bodell

October 24, 1922 — December 15, 2008

Alice Rita Bodell, long time resident of Hooksett New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2008 at the Villa Crest Retirement Community.

Alice was born in 1922 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of Alphonse J. Cardin and Katherine Gomes Cardin. Her father emigrated from Sorel, Quebec, while her mother came to America from the Azores Islands, arriving at Ellis Island in 1899.

Alice was educated in the Pawtucket, Rhode Island public school system. During her senior year, Alice was the 1940, Toleman High School, Homecoming Queen. During World War II, she worked as an expediter for the Department of Navy. She was also a member of the Pawtucket City Girls Club, an affiliate of the USO. Alice, with her sister Mary, would regularly travel to the Newport Navy Base to provide support to the seamen stationed there.

Alice married James Edward Bodell in Pawtucket, Rhode Island on February 9, 1946. James had recently returned from World War II service as a Lieutenant pilot in the US Army Air Corp. Alice and Jimmy enjoyed a very loving and full life together for over 50 years. They greatly enjoyed traveling and made numerous trips within the United States and Europe. Alice and Jimmy also enjoyed over fifteen years of retirement, dividing their time between Hooksett and wintering in Venice, Florida. Alice was profoundly affected by Jimmy's passing, in 1998, and it was evident that he always remained very much in her heart.

Alice returned to the workforce when her three children had grown. She was employed as an office manager for several local firms. Alice spent her final fifteen years of employment as family assistance specialist at the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. Alice was recognized for her can-do attitude and the compassion that she showed for those less fortunate citizens that she served. During her retirement she was also recognized for her volunteer work at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester.

Alice was predeceased by her brother, Alexander Cardin of Pawtucket, Rhode Island and her sister, Mary Paquette of Venice, Florida. Her eldest son, Edward M. Bodell, passed away in June 2005 in Cary, North Carolina. She is survived by her daughter Allyson Mary Bodell, of Hooksett, and her son and daughter-in-law Barry James and Lisa C. Bodell, of Concord, New Hampshire. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Janet Bodell, of Cary, North Carolina and four grandchildren; Mrs. Alyssa Ehl, of Hooksett, Ms. Amy Bodell of Conway, New Hampshire, Mrs. Kristen Deak of Cary, North Carolina and Brendan Byrne Bodell of Concord New Hampshire, as well as many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday, December 19, 2008 at St. Catherine's Church, Manchester.

Burial was in the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society Memorial Giving Program, 2 Commerce Dr., Suite 110, Bedford, NH 03110
