Andre A. "'Andy" Martel

Andre A. "Andy" Martel, 70, of Manchester, NH, died December 22, 2016 at Catholic Medical Center.

He was born in Manchester December 16, 1946 to Gerard J. Martel and Simonne (Beliveau) Binette. He was a graduate of Bishop Bradley High School and Southern NH University. He later pursued executive management studies at Cornell and Princeton Universities as well as Emerson and Wellesley Colleges.

Andy had worked as a general manager and senior auditor for Grand Union Company then as assistant manager at Tele-Copying Machine Lab, Nashua Corp. He later worked as manager for Worldwide Business Materials at Digital Equipment Corp. for many years. For the past year he had worked part time for the City of Manchester.

Andy was elected seven times as a member of the NH general court from 1998 until 2016; five times to the House of Representatives and twice to the State Senate. While serving in the House he was a member of the Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee. While serving in the State Senate he was chairman of the Public Institutions and Human Services Committee. He also served as a member of the Insurance Committee and the Transportation Committee.

During 2005 and 2006 respectively, Andy served as Senate Liaison to the House of Representatives under Senate President Tom Eaton and as Vice President of the Senate under President Ted Gatsas. He was also Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee and served as a member of Public and Municipal Affairs Committee and the Transportation and Interstate Cooperation Committee. During those years he was a member of the NH Canadian Trade Council and the A-team for state recounts.

Andy was re-elected this past November to another term and was re-appointed to the Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee. He would have enjoyed his new seat assignment (1-4) in the front row of Section 1 in the House Chamber for the upcoming session.

Andy chaired the Save Catholic Medical Center Community Action Group during the 1990's. He had been a member of the Association for Operations Management, the Richelieu Club and the National Republican Leadership Association. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Board of Directors for the Heartland Institute, American Cancer Society and the Senior Auditors Society. He was a also a member of L'Association Canado Americaine.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Simone (Leclerc) Martel of Manchester; five children, John Martel and his companion, Lonnie Rutledge, of Concord, Steven Martel of Manchester, Philip Martel and his fiancée, Stacy Delsignore, of Manchester, Matthew Martel and his wife, Ashley, and Lauren Stibs and her husband, Jacob, of Manchester; six grandchildren, Ashley, Tiffany, Dakota, Jonathan, Mackenzie and Ryleigh; a sister, Sr. Rita Martel, PM of Methuen, MA; nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 14 Elm St., Manchester, NH. Burial followed in Mount Calvary Cemetery, 474 Goffstown Rd., Manchester, NH
