Anita R. Sweeney, 87, of Manchester, died August 16, 2017 at her residence.
She was born in Wilton on March 30, 1930 to Willie and Diana (Gagnon) Sweeney.
A graduate of St. George High School in Manchester, Anita trained at the New Hampshire State Hospital in Concord. She earned her registered nurse's cap, a Bachelor of Science in nursing, cum laude, from St. Anselm College and a master of science in nursing from Adelphi College, Garden City, NJ. She served as assistant director for the school of nursing at New Hampshire Hospital in Concord and taught nursing at several area colleges. She held positions at Jersey City Medical Center, Jersey City, NJ, Moore General Hospital and Veterans Administration hospitals in several states.
After retirement, Anita volunteered with the seniors group, Prime Time, and was a supporter of the Sisters of the Holy Cross and the Precious Blood Monastery. She was also an avid reader and letter writer, knitting together disparate threads of family and friends over many generations.
She leaves a legacy of love, loyalty and service that unites her numerous cousins, godchildren and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, August 21, 2017 at St. Catherine Church, 267 Webster St., Manchester. Committal prayers followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 61 Island Rd., Wilton.
