Armand Huppe

December 13, 1921 — October 16, 2009

Brother Armand Huppe, O.S.B., 87, Benedictine monk of Saint Anselm Abbey in Goffstown died, October 16, 2009 at Catholic Medical Center, Manchester.

He was born in Manchester, December 13, 1921, and was the son of George and Beatrice (Trudel) Huppe.

He received his early education at St. Augustin and St. Marie grammar school. He began his High School at Manchester High School West. He left West to work in the New Deal's national Youth Administration, and under it's auspices attended radio school in Concord and signal corps school in Medford Mass. In 1942 he entered the United States Army, and served in the pacific theatre aboard the USS Hermitage, as well as land bases in Karachi, and northern India. For his service he was awarded the Army's Distinguished Service Medal and a Bronze Star for bravery. Following the war he completed his High School in Hartford CT.

In 1958, he entered the community of St. Anselm Abbey. He professed his simple vows in 1960. Over the years he served the College as an electrician, and Postmaster, before retiring from college work in 1974. For as long as he could, every week Brother Armand brought his card playing skills and enthusiasm to the elderly of St. Theresa's manor in Manchester where he faithfully visited the residents weekly, playing cards, listening, and praying with them. Though sensitive and reserved by nature and burdened with serious ailments for many years, he enjoyed good humor and in return for a word of encouragement offered a gentle and beautiful smile.

In addition to his Benedictine community, Bro. Armand leaves 2 sisters, Louise Perron, of MD, Doris Huppe, of Manchester; 3 brothers, Marcel, Andrew, George Huppe, all of Manchester; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; he was predeceased by 3 brothers, Robert, Maurice, Ronald, and a sister, Theresa Baine.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Thursday, October 22, 2009 in the abbey church on campus.

Burial followed in Saint Leander's Cemetery adjacent to the abbey.
