Arthur H. Bernier, Jr., 84, of Manchester, died January 16, 2017 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Somersworth on August 2, 1932, the son of Arthur and Reina (Laliberte) Bernier, Sr. He graduated from Bristol High School and went on to serve in th US Army National Guard from 1950 until his retirement in 1989. Arthur responded to the call of his country in 1961-1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During his tenure, he served as Command Sargent Major, HQ 3rd Btn, 197 Field Artillery.
Arthur was employed as a salesperson for Sears Roebuck for 39 years before his retirement in 1991. Upon retirement, he enjoyed part time employment, ushering at Fisher Cats ballgames and also at SNHU Arena. Arthur enjoyed all sports and was an enthusiastic outdoorsman. His most memorable times were in Pittsburg, NH at his camp, snowmobiling with family and friends.
Family includes his wife of 60 years, Jeannine (Turcotte) Bernier of Manchester; a daughter, Michele Bernier of Manchester; two sons, Dan Bernier of Manchester, and David Bernier and wife Patti of Sanbornton; four grandchildren, Melanie, T.J., Megan, and Josh; three great grandchildren; a sister, Connie Hebert and husband Louis of Manchester; a brother, Raymond Bernier and wife Louise of Clinton, CT; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, January 20, 2017 at St. Joseph Cathedral, 145 Lowell St., Manchester. Committal Prayers with military honors followed in the chapel at NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Arthur's name to: Friends of Manchester Animal Shelter, 490 Dunbarton Rd, Manchester, NH 03102.
