Manchester

Bernard “Bernie” O’Neil, 89, of Manchester, died March 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Manchester on June 18, 1936, he was the son of Patrick and Albertine (Manseau) O’Neil. He graduated from Manchester West High School.

Bernie proudly served with the Manchester Fire Department for many years, retiring with the rank of Captain. His career came to an end due to an accident sustained in the line of duty, forcing him into retirement sooner than he would have chosen. He committed his career to serving and protecting the people of Manchester. Following his retirement from the fire department, he continued working with the Teamsters.

Bernie had a lifelong love for the outdoors. He especially enjoyed deep sea fishing on his boat. He was also an avid hunter and took great pride in teaching his grandsons how to hunt. He and his beloved wife enjoyed daily drives together, simply exploring and spending time side by side. Bernie especially loved family barbeques, where he was happiest surrounded by those he loved and enjoying good food.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Theresa (Milne) O’Neil of Manchester, affectionately known to him as “Queenie,” his partner in life and love with whom he built a family and shared a lifetime of memories.

Bernie was the proud father of five children. He was predeceased by his daughter, Katherine Almasy. He is survived by his daughter, Sharon Montminy and her husband Kenneth of Goffstown; and his sons, Kevin O’Neil and his wife Janice of Northfield, Thomas O’Neil and his wife Judith of Manchester, and Brian O’Neil and his fiancée Cathy Gauthier of Manchester.

He is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought him great pride and joy, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Calling hours at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., will be Saturday, March 7th from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a service in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, at a later date.
