He was born in Stewartstown on August 22, 1920 and was the son of Guy and Evelyn (Towle) Placey. He had been a resident of the Colebrook area all of his life.
Mr. Placey worked for six years at the Washburn Mill in Stratford before venturing out on his own to try his hand at farming, which he did until he retired. He was very active in Stewartstown town politics where he served on the school board and as Director of Welfare. He also drove a bus for many years.
He served as police chief of Stewartstown and became good friends with many of the state troopers that started out in the North Country. Those friendships remained strong long after he had retired.
Burleigh had a great sense of humor and loved playing practical jokes on his friends. He spent much time at Howards Restaurant and in the later years at the Colebrook House of Pizza, where a lot of fun was had with the locals that met there on a daily basis. He loved working on his land and in his trees, as well as trapping hunting and fishing. He was a wonderful friend, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by many.
Family members include his two daughters, Suzanne Fournier and her husband, Roger of Londonderry; and Monda Placey and her husband, Brian Collins of Colebrook; three grandchildren, Kim Draper and her husband, John of Manchester, Laurie Hodgmen and her husband, Jason of Twin Mountain and Elizabeth Collins of Colebrook; one great grandchild, Lola Rae Hodgman of Twin Mountain; a sister, Arlene Riendeau of Stewartstown; and a brother, Donald Placey of Stewartstown.
He was predeceased by five brothers, Willard Placey, Guy Placey, Reginald Placey,Shirley Placey and William Placey; and by one sister, Pauline McAllaster.
A memorial service was held Saturday, December 13, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Bridge Street, Colebrook. Burial took place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Helping Hands, Main St., Colebrook, or to the Community Action Food Pantry, Pleasant St., Colebrook
