Born in Manchester on September 26, 1925, she was the daughter of Patrick J. and Delia (Reddington) Monaghan. She was the youngest of six children. Kay grew up in "The Fields" section of the city and remained true to her Irish heritage.
Catherine attended the former McDonald School, class of 1939 and Central High School, class of 1943.
Prior to retirement in 1979, she had worked for Travelers Insurance Company for 20 years having filled the rolls of supervisor and marketing assistant. She was active in the city's old Ward 5 where she was Ward clerk from 1953 to 1973. She also served on the School Board for 12 years from 1961 to 1973.
Kay was an active worker for the former Gov. John King campaign and was also a lifetime member of the former St. Anne Parish.
Kay's love for the parish lead her to volunteer on several church committees including the parish council, Diocesan school board, the 100th, 125th, and 150th parish anniversaries, and the annual St. Patrick's Day dinners. She also served as president of the St. Anne's Women's Guild and in March of 1996 was honored as Prime Time Senior of the Month where she had also spent 13 years volunteering in the pastoral care department.
In 1999, she was awarded the "Mother Frances Ward" award for outstanding Irish Catholic by the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and in 2009 was selected by the A.O.H. and L.A.O.H to be "Grand Marshall" of the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.
She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She lovingly shared her life with her community and her service was but an extension of her faith and love of people.
Family members include her brother John F. Monaghan of Manchester; nephews, John Doherty of Nashua and Joseph Doherty of Port Sanilac, MI, Kevin, Stephen, and David Monaghan, all of Manchester; nieces Kathleen Doherty Whitham of Richmond, NH, and Joanne Monaghan Gonzales of Manchester; five grandnephews, four grandnieces; two great-grand nephews and a great-grandniece; many relatives in Ireland, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and New Hampshire. She also leaves behind her dear cat Moe-Moe.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Monaghan Doherty, Ann Monaghan, Margaret Monaghan, and a brother, Peter J. Monaghan.
The funeral Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, July 25, 2011 in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, Meetinghouse Road, Bedford. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Monastery of the Precious Blood, 700 Bridge St, Manchester, NH or to the St. Anne-St. Augustin Church Building Fund, 383 Beech St, Manchester, NH 03103.
