Charles A. Colpitts

Charles A. Colpitts, 76, of Monroe and formerly of Bedford, died August 18, 2009 at his son's home after a period of declining health.

Born in Campton on January 18, 1933, he was the son of Stephen and Minnie Louise (Avery) Colpitts. He attended local schools and graduated from Plymouth Teacher's College in 1954.

During the Korean War he served in the US Air Force.

Mr. Colpitts was a teacher for a brief time, then worked in the personnel department for the state of New Hampshire for 30 years.

While in Bedford he served as a selectman and was on the Town Council, the Zoning Board, the Planning Board and the Historic District Commission. He was also active with Boy Scout Troop 114. Little League baseball and Babe Ruth League baseball.

He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Irene E. (Pare) Colpitts in April of this year

IN HIS LIFE: He was a longtime communicant of St. Elizabeth Seton Church and was on the church council during its formation. He was also a lector, song leader and member of the choir.

He was a member of the Lyons Club, the Knights of Columbus, the Queen City Harmonizers, the Concord Coachmen Barbershop Harmony Chorus and the Hampshire Hi-Notes Quartet. He volunteered for the NH Food Bank in Manchester and served on the Board of Incorporators at Catholic Medical Center.

His love for gardening was apparent in the beautiful gardens he tended at his home in Bedford.

The family includes five children, Dr. Gregory S. Colpitts of Franklin, Matthew Colpitts and his wife, Carolyn, of Sugar Hill, G. Christopher Colpitts and his wife, Rebecca, of Monroe, Elizabeth Colpitts-Hall and her husband, Matthew, of Hopkinton, and Martha Cronin and her husband, Jon, of Bedford; 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild; a brother, Guthrie Colpitts of Land O' Lakes, FL and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Priscilla O'Brian and Dorothy Colpitts.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, August 24, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd., Bedford. Committal prayers followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 474 Goffstown Rd., Manchester.
