Clifford J. Ross, 89, of Manchester, died October 7, 2016 at his residence after a long illness.
He was born in Boston, MA on August 10, 1927, the son of Aris Xaros, a native of Tripolis, Greece, and Margaret (Harrington) Xaros, a native of County Sligo, Ireland.
He graduated from Boston Latin School, Boston College and Boston College Law School. His attendance at BC and BC Law School was interrupted by volunteered military service during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
He moved to Manchester in 1952 and became vice-president and general manager of the George H. Griffin Insurance Agency. He thereafter served as a Manchester Finance Commissioner and Manchester City Solicitor. Former Governor John W, King appointed him as a member of the Commission to Codify the New Hampshire Criminal Laws and also nominated him to serve as New Hampshire Deputy Attorney General. He was chosen as the Manchester Bar Association's 1996 Lawyer of the Year.
Mr. Ross served as president of the Manchester JayCees and director of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Manchester Kiwanis Club. He was president of Manchester Family Service Society, director of the Manchester Salvation Army Advisory Board and trustee of the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences. He was also chairman of the Manchester Democratic City Committee and New Hampshire Democratic Business and Professional Association and secretary of the New Hampshire Democratic State Committee. He was elected twice as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions.
He loved sports and had played for, and later managed, the town of Bedford's baseball team. He also served as counsel to the New Hampshire Basketball Referees' Association, the Manchester Regional Youth Hockey Association and the Intervale Country Club.
The family includes his beloved wife of 64 years, Johanna C. (Murphy) Ross of Manchester; four children, Michael S. Ross, Eileen E. Ross, David A. Ross and Ami Sarasvati all of Manchester; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Lindh, Michael Lindh, Benjamin Ross, Justin Tracy and Rose Tracy; a sister, Barbara E. Campbell of Framingham, MA and a host of delightful nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, October 10, 2016 at St. Raphael Church, 103 Walker St., Manchester.
