COL. (Ret.) Leo Charles Waible

COL. (Ret.) Leo Charles Waible, Jr. beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and good friend passed away peacefully Monday September 20, 2021. Leo was born December 4, 1932 to Leo and Gertrude (Weckesser) Waible on Parker Hill Avenue, Roxbury, Massachusetts. He graduated from Boston College in 1954 with a BS in physics, where he was captain of the ski team. He received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program (ROTC) at that time. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Jane Agnes (Hughes) Waible and never left her side. He furthered his education with a Master of Science (Aerospace Engineering) in 1965 from The University of Arizona and attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island in 1974.
Colonel Waible's assignments included a tour in Korea and from July 1968 to June 1969 he served in Vietnam as a Lieutenant Colonel where he earned the Bronze Star for Meritorious Achievement in Ground Operations Against Hostile Forces. Some of his other decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Legion of Merit Award, Meritorious Service Award, Army Commendation Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After returning from Vietnam he served as commanding officer at a Nike Missile base and at the Pentagon. After 25 years of service in the US Army Corps, Colonel Waible retired from military service in 1980. He worked at Raytheon in the private sector until he fully retired on November 30, 1993.
Leo was a devout member of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford, NH. His hobbies included hiking, skiing, travelling and woodworking. However, he cherished his family more than anything else. Leo will be remembered for his warm gentleness, huge smile and how he laughed until he cried.
Leo is survived by his wife Jane and his children, Leo C. Waible, III and wife Barbara, Edward M. Waible and wife Karen, Laura A. Azorian, his brother David Waible and wife Amelia, sisters Trudy Wardrop and husband Rick and Francie Hankins and daughter-in-law Valrie Waible; His 8 Grandchildren include Meredith Waible, Leo C. Waible, IV, Vanessa Waible, Stephen Waible II, Sophia Waible, Gregory Smith, Kilian Waible and Kelsi Waible along with 2 Great-grandchildren Leo C. Waible, V (Arlo) and Eden Waible. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Christine Waible and son Stephen Waible Sr.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with family on Tuesday September 28th from 4-7 PM at Lambert Funeral & Crematory located at 1799 Elm Street, Manchester, New Hampshire. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on September 29th at 10 AM at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Road, Bedford, New Hampshire 03110. Interment will follow at 12:00 PM at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery located at 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, New Hampshire 03303. Reception to follow.
