Colin Grant

August 6, 1929 — November 1, 2021

Dr. Colin Grant MD, (92) formerly of Manchester NH, passed away peacefully on November 1st at the Gloucester Healthcare Nursing Home in Gloucester, MA.

Colin was born in August 6, 1929 in Woolwich, Greater London, England to Joseph Grant (a patent office examiner) and Daisy (Waterworth) Grant. He and his younger brother, Kenneth, grew up in the greater London borough of Bromley, England.

He attended Highgate School, and the University of London-King's College. His clinical medical training was completed at Westminster Hospital and St. Stephen's Hospitals in London. After earning his MBBS medical degree, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps, mainly in Cyprus and the Middle East, achieving the rank of Captain. After returning to London in 1955 he met a lovely nurse Ingeborg Kirsche. They married on August 7, 1965 and then sailed to America on Queen Mary in a combined emigration and honeymoon.

His early work in Cardiology research and hemodynamics led to his induction as a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA); as well as a nomination and membership into both The American Federation for Medical Research and into the scientific research and honor society, Sigma Xi.

In 1970 he joined the Veterans Administration Medical Centers where he combined his enjoyment of cardiology research with thorough care of his Cardiology patients. He was an American College of Cardiology fellow, a Lecturer at Harvard University and worked at the VA in Albany, NY; Albuquerque, NM and then, for the final 13 years of his career, in Manchester, NH.

His professional work was balanced by his hobbies which included a life long love of sailing. Colin was a voracious reader, and life-long learner. He loved intellectual discussions of history and scientific discovery just as much as sharing stories over sandwiches and beer on a sailboat. He was a member of the Kiwanis, MENSA, Massabesic Yacht Club and Mountain View Yacht Clubs in New Hampshire and Community Boating, Inc. in Boston.

He is survived by his ex-wife Inge Grant of Concord, NH, sons Keith Grant and William Grant, daughter-in-Law Rachel Panush-Grant, grandchildren, Lia and Etan Grant of Los Angeles, CA. his daughter Heidi Grant-Derian, son-in-law Albert Derian, grandsons Jack and Benjamin Derian of Gloucester, MA. his beloved brother Kenneth Grant and sister-in-law Anna (Griffiths) Grant, niece Dr. Elizabeth Grant, and nephew-in-law Jasjit Gill, two grand-nephews Kalum and Andrew Gill and one grand-niece Sonia Gill, of Vancouver BC, Canada.
