Costos C. Poulos, O.D., F.A.A.O., 87, died at home September 26, 2004.

He was born in Manchester, NH on August 29, 1917, the son of the late Christos and Chrysoula (Bokas) Poulos. Dr. Poulos was a graduate of Manchester High School Central, Class of 1935-A. He attended the University of Connecticut, and was a 1943 graduate of the Massachusetts School of Optometry. He served in the US Army from 1943 to 1946 as an optometrist.

Dr. Poulos practiced in Plainville, CT from 1946 to 1999.

He was active in many civic, philanthropic, and professional organizations including the Plainville Lions Club, St. George Parish Council, the Connecticut Optometric Society, and served on the Board of Trustees for both the New England College of Optometry and the Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary. In 1980, Dr. Poulos was honored as Optometrist of the Year by the American Optometrist Association. In 1981, he was honored by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, His All Holiness Demetrios, with highest award to a Greek Orthodox lay person, Archon of the Order of St. Andrew.

A loving father and grandfather, he leaves his wife, Alice (Mourkas) Poulos of Plainville; his daughter, Elaine Poulos; his son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Robyn Poulos; daughter and son-in-law Chrys and William Sweet; and his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Stephen and Mary Polezonis; and his grandchildren, Alexander, Zachary, and Eliza Poulos and Colette and Alicia Polezonis. He also leaves his sisters, Marina Lenis and Efthimia Contos; his brothers, Attorney Theodore Poulos, and Joseph Poulos of Manchester, NH; Several nephews and nieces. He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Marie (Calathas) Poulos, a brother Thomas Poulos and a sister, Rita Zissopoulos.

Funeral services were held last Thursday in St. George Greek Orthodox Church, New Britain, CT. Burial with military honors was in West Cemetery, Bristol. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hellenic Scholarship Fund, Care of St. George Cathedral, 650 Hanover St, Manchester, NH 03104.
