Douglas C. MacKenzie

December 21, 1936 — January 7, 2025

Manchester

Douglas C. MacKenzie, 88, of Manchester, NH passed peacefully on January 7, 2025 to join his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Nancy MacKenzie. Doug is survived by his children, Cathy (Michael) Lyons of Medfield, MA, Scott (Genevieve) MacKenzie of Bedford, NH, his grandchildren, Douglas (Joely) MacKenzie of Hudson, NH, Lydia MacKenzie of Boulder, CO, Greg Lyons of San Francisco, CA, Cara Lyons of Cambridge, MA, great-grandchildren, Scott and Nina MacKenzie, sister Cynthia (Lance) Marston of Callao, VA, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother Richard MacKenzie, sister Joan Eustis, and grandson, Jackson MacKenzie.

Doug was born in 1936 to Victor and Ruth MacKenzie and grew up in Pembroke, NH. He attended Pembroke Academy and was a 1958 graduate of the University of New Hampshire. A walk-on his freshman year, Doug became a standout lacrosse player, becoming captain and setting a long-standing scoring record. He was later inducted into the UNH Athletic Hall of Fame. Doug made lifetime friendships at UNH through lacrosse, Theta Chi fraternity, and ROTC. He had the good fortune to meet Nancy there, and they married in 1958.

After college Doug served several years in the US Army and then began work at the family business, MacKenzie Motors in Manchester, NH. He was a board member of the YMCA, The Boy’s Club of Manchester, and the NH Automobile Dealers Association. After selling MacKenzie Motors, Doug began a rewarding second career at The Derryfield School. He was a teacher, athletic director, lacrosse coach, assistant coach, and substitute teacher. “Mac” formed many enduring friendships with the student and faculty.

Doug and his family enjoyed homes in Amherst, NH, a summer camp in Wolfeboro, and a winter home in Tuscon, AZ, where he worked on honing his golf game with a great group of friends. A lifelong athlete, Dog enjoyed tennis, badminton, basketball, running and golf. He valued all the friendships he made through sports. Doug loved spending time with his family, especially at the lake, where he led boat rides, held raft jumping competitions, and made custom breakfasts for the grandchildren. He was always at the ready with playful banter and an entertaining story of his past adventures. Doug will be remembered for his good humor, generosity, and love for his wife and family.

Honoring Doug’s wishes, no services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Manchester. Remembrances may be shared on the guestbook portion of Doug’s obituary page at Lambertfuneralhome.com.
