E. Harriet (Oxenham) Carey of Manchester, NH and, earlier, of Hingham, MA, died peacefully on January 26, 2021 with her family close by. She was 94 years old.

Harriet (Hattie) was born in New York City in 1926, the daughter of Alfred Julian Oxenham and Pauline (Kerl) Oxenham. She was baptized by Norman Vincent Peale in New York City at the Marble Collegiate Church, and she grew up with her brother, Alfred J. Oxenham (who predeceased her), in Amagansett, New York. Hattie entered Wellesley College at age 16, and received her BA in Sociology in 1947. She met and married Harry Vincent Carey after a blind date, when he returned from WWII. Harry was a Second Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps, where he was copilot of a B-24 "Liberator" bomber.

Hattie lived many decades in Hingham, and her life was filled with family, tennis, books, dogs, a well-loved pony and travel. She took joy in her tennis and played in a competitive league while a winter resident at Harbour Ridge, Stuart, FL. Harry predeceased her in 1974, and she took over management of Barney and Carey Lumber Company for several years.

She leaves behind her children, Joanne Pender (Paul), Martha Donelan (John), Margaret Pfau (predeceased by William), Susan Hatfield (William), Peter Carey (Elizabeth); her fourteen grandchildren: David Eldredge (Catherine), Catherine Mitchell-Hardt (Matt), Harriet Eldredge-Hindy (Nick), Emily Pender, Elizabeth Chambers (Jennifer), Sarah Guilbride (Tom), Wendy Pfau (Jack), Bill Pfau, Peter Hatfield (Celia), Bill Hatfield, Sally Hatfield, Peter Carey, David Carey, Eleanor Carey; and also nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for family only will be held in Milton, MA. Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester, NH, is assisting the family with arrangements. Remembrances may be sent to: Granite YMCA c/o YMCA Allard Center, Goffstown, NH, 116 Goffstown Back Rd, Goffstown, NH 03045.
