Edith (Baylor) Cummings, 93, of Manchester, NH passed away peacefully on March 27. She was born May 18, 1929 in Boston, MA, the daughter of Sidney H. Baylor and Lillian C. (Ratigan) Baylor. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard H. Cummings.
She attended Newton, MA schools and graduated from the former Oak Grove School, a boarding school for girls in Vasselboro, Maine. She attended the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 1951, she married Charles Dean Lawton, with whom she had two sons.
In the 1960’s, she moved to New Hampshire with her sons, where she met and married Mr. Cummings. She lived many years in Northwood, NH before moving to Manchester.
She was the Director of Griffin Free Public Library in Auburn, NH for many years until her retirement in 2012. Prior to that position, she worked at the Northwood, NH and Hooksett, NH libraries. She also worked at the Moore Center in Manchester, supervising disabled clients as they entered the work force.
Mrs. Cummings was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and had been a member of the vestry.
She leaves her sons, Peter E. Lawton of Florida and Mark D. Lawton of Virginia, and a daughter, Patricia (Cummings) Gerlt of New Hampshire; five grandchildren, Shane, Maggie and Sophie Lawton, and Ryan and Corey Gerlt; and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Sophia Lawton. Her extended family includes Mr. Cummings children, Richard, Eugene, and Kathy Cummings, and the late Phillip Cummings, and granddaughter Skye Cummings.
There are no calling hours. All family, adopted family, and friends are invited to celebrate her life at a service on April 27th at 1 pm at Grace Episcopal Church, 106 Lowell St., Manchester, NH. Interment will be April 28th at 1 pm at Bigelow Chapel in Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge, MA.
