Edward V. Fitzpatrick, 86, of Manchester, died Saturday October 29, 2005 at the Elliot hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Manchester on September 11, 1919, and was the son of Edward and Helen (Osgood) Fitzpatrick.
He was a member of the Class of 1937 Manchester High School Central. He worked at the International Shoe Company in Manchester. In 1938 he joined the NH National Guard. He was called up in 1940, and served as an artillery Captain in the Pacific Theater, seeing conflict in Guadalcanal, New Britain and the Philippines. He returned to the Guard in 1945 and served with the 172nd Field Artillery battalion. He participated in the call up of the battalion in 1961 in response to the Berlin Crisis. He retired in 1964 as a Lt. Colonel.
After graduating from UNH with a Civil Engineering degree in 1949, he worked for the Manchester Highway Department as a bridge engineer. Later he worked for the NH Public Health Department. In 1964 he accepted a commission in the Federal Public Health Service, serving in Colorado and New Jersey. In 1970, when the EPA was formed, he became the Director of the Regional EPA Laboratory in Massachusetts. He served in the EPA until his retirement in 1985. In retirement he resided in Sarasota FL and Sanbornton NH for ten years, returning to Manchester in 1995. He enjoyed photography and was an avid reader.
He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Margaret M. (Crotty) Fitzpatrick in July of 2004.
Family members include 5 sons; John, of Washburn WI, James, of Ashland WI, Martin, of Needham MA, Thomas, of Douglas MA, Richard, of Goffstown; 13 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday November 4, 2005 in St. Catherine Church, 225 Hemlock St.
Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, 448 Donald St. Bedford.
