He was born in Concord, May 11, 1930, the son of R. Towle Child and Dorothy (Knapp) Child. He grew up in Pembroke, receiving his early education there. He earned his B.S. from MIT in 1952, his MD from Yale University in 1956, and MPH from Harvard in 1959. He returned to Yale for residency in OB-GYN from 1961-1964 and then worked at Hawaii Permanente Medical Group and Group Health in DC before coming to Manchester in 1969. In 1984 he was one of the founding physicians of the Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic in Manchester. During his Manchester career he delivered thousands of babies.
Dr. Child was a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Surgeons, American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. He was the first OB/GYN physician in southern New Hampshire to use laparoscopy in his practice.
Over the years, Dr. Child donated his time on short term medical mission trips to Liberia, Jamaica and Kenya, supporting the work of family and friends by treating the poor and teaching doctors.
Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior. He enjoyed hosting Bible studies in his home. He was member of Southside Bible Fellowship where he sang with the Worship Team and served as an Elder for many years. He enjoyed spending time traveling, visiting children and grandchildren all over the world.
Family members include his wife of fifty years, Barbara (Manning) Child, of Manchester; his children, Stephen Child, of MA, Karen Shannon, MD of Manchester, Marybeth Stevenson of TX, Ted Child, resides in East Asia; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Kelsey, of CT; a brother, David Child, MD, of AZ; several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service was held Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Southside Bible Fellowship, 200 South Jewett St. Manchester.
Burial took place in the Spring, at the Bedford Center
Cemetery.
