Effie Mandelos

At 100 years young, Effie S. Mandelos of Manchester, NH, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 1, 2021. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Effie was Born in Lowell, MA, on July 13, 1921, and was the daughter of James and Helen (Pappagianis) Sintros and the loving wife of the late Stephen Mandelos, to whom she was married for 68 years.

In her early years, she was a faithful member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Lowell, MA and thereafter was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Manchester, NH for over 70 years.

Effie was remarkable in every aspect of her life. She will be remembered as that rare soul who touched the lives of all of those she encountered. Her smile lit up a room and was always a sparkling beacon of light which illuminated such warmth. She infused and embraced life with love, kindness, gratitude, humility, compassion, strength, humor, and grace. Her family would always refer to her as their "Angel on Earth".

Effie embraced life but especially loved spending time with her family and friends listening to Greek music, dancing, playing the piano and attending church every Sunday.

In times when women rarely held prominent roles in business, Effie eventually rose to executive positions. She began her career at R. P. Burroughs Co. and continued her career as Head of Human Resources at industrial technology firms including Van Norman Industries, Transitron, Raytheon and Sanders Associates. Effie also served on the Board of Directors at United Federal Bank for several years. At age 65, she retired from Sanders Associates after 25 years of service.

Effie is survived by her daughter Fran Chiavaras and John Chiavaras, three grandchildren - James Chiavaras and wife Heather of Concord, NH and great grandchildren Alexander and Andrew, Stephanie Chiavaras of Boston, MA, and Daphne Chiavaras of Portsmouth, NH, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by her husband Stephen Mandelos, two brothers Alexander Sintros and wife Cookie, Charles Sintros and wife Martha, her sister Harriet Lazarakis and husband Angelo, and great grandson – Michael Chiavaras.

There are no public calling hours. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 5th at 11 am in St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Manchester. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St, Manchester, NH 03104.
