Ernest (Ernie) Greenberg of Hooksett, NH, passed away peacefully on July 1, two days shy of his 89th birthday.
Ernie was born July 3, 1932, in Providence, RI, to the late Abraham and Claire (Shulman) Greenberg. Ernie resided in Manchester, NH for 60 years before moving to Hooksett in 2004.
Ernie graduated from Manchester Central HS in 1950, and then attended the University of New Hampshire. His college experience was interrupted by service in the US Army, including 27 months on Okinawa during the Korean War. Following the war, Ernie returned to UNH, earning his Bachelor's degree in 1956.
In 1960, Ernie met his future bride, Loretta Riner, at his friend's (and her cousin's) wedding. Loretta became Ernie's ever-loving "Lol," and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September.
Ernie spent many years working in advertising sales with his father before joining the administration at New Hampshire College, eventually becoming Dean of Continuing Education. His later career included many years in sales and marketing, retiring at the age of 83.
Since 1980, Ernie entertained crowds as the public address announcer for the Southern New Hampshire men's and women's basketball games. As a color analyst for radio broadcasts, he was inducted as part of the 1980 Men's Basketball Team into the SNHU Hall of Fame in 2012.
An avid tennis player into his 70s, Ernie also loved baseball and basketball. He was also active in the leadership of Temple Adath Yeshurun, filling many board positions including past-president.
Ernie spent countless hours with his canine companions, Eddie and the late Honey. But the biggest joy in Ernie's life was his family. He and Loretta raised three sons, and he was the proud Grampy/Beepee to six grandsons, one granddaughter and one great grandson.
In addition to Loretta, Ernie is survived by his sister Thelma Florin and her husband Richard of West Orange, NJ; his son Gary and daughter-in-law Dawn of San Jose, CA; his son Michael and daughter-in-law Mindee of Nashua, NH; his son Glenn and daughter-in-law Meredith of Natick, MA; his grandchildren Joshua and his wife Elana, Jeremy, Alan, Jacob, Sam, Seth and Caroline; great-grandson Jeremy; and nieces and nephews and their families. He was pre-deceased by his daughter-in-law Debra (Samuels) Greenberg.
The Greenberg family would like to add a special note of gratitude to Deb Belair for all of her help with and tender loving care for their dog, Eddie, particular during recent trying times.
SERVICES: A graveside funeral service will take place at 1:00 pm on Tuesday in the Hebrew Cemetery,
S. Beech St., Manchester NH 03103. All who can join are welcome. Gifts in Ernie's memory can be made to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund at Temple Adath Yeshurun, 152 Prospect Street, Manchester, NH 03104.
