Ernst A. Gutbier

Ernst A. Gutbier, 84, of 300 River Rd., Manchester, NH, died June 6, 2003, at the Elliot Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Dresden, Germany, December 15, 1918, and was the son of Ludwig W. and Antonie (Iden) Gutbier. He was educated in Europe and was a decorated tank commander in the German Army during World War II.

His engineering career began in Europe and after immigrating to the United States in the 1950's, he worked for over 20 years as a senior engineer with Western Electric, Merrimack Valley Works pioneering the mass production of circuit boards. He had a number of US patents to his credit primarily related to advanced soldering techniques. His innovations were well published and he provided technical services to telephone company plants throughout the United States.

He lived in North Andover Mass for several years and after retiring, moved to Vienna Austria. He had been a Manchester resident since 1991.

He enjoyed camping, the ocean, classical music and traveled extensively throughout Europe.

Family members include his wife of 30 years, Marianne (Laube) Gutbier of Manchester; 3 daughters, Maria Leighton of Kingston, NH, Suzanne Romano of Atkinson, NH, and Victoria Gutbier of Haverhill, Mass; 2 step daughters, Joanne Fish of Pembroke, and Suzanne Simmons of Alton; a step son, Keven Simone of Wolfeboro, NH; 5 grandchildren; one great grandchild.

A service of remembrance was held Monday June 23, 2003 in Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., corner of North St.
