On Saturday, April 7, 2018, the Reverend Paul F. McHugh was called to his rest and to the glory of the Resurrection promised by the Lord. He was 89 years old.
Father McHugh was born on January 10, 1929 in Manchester, New Hampshire and was ordained a priest on May 30, 1953 by the Most Reverend Matthew F. Brady, D.D. at Saint Joseph Cathedral in Manchester. Father McHugh studied at Saint Anselm College, Manchester; Keene Teachers College, Keene; and Boston University, Boston, MA. He completed his ecclesiastical studies at the University of Ottawa Seminary in Ottawa, PQ, Canada.
Father McHugh served as associate pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, Hinsdale; Saint Bernard Parish, Keene; Saint Catherine Parish; Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Pittsfield. He served as Assistant Director, Department of Education. He served as Business Administrator and Chaplain of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Dover. He served as Chaplain to Mt. St. Mary College, Hooksett while continuing as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He was assigned to NCEA, Washington, DC for three months. He was then named Director, N.E. Catholic Education Center, Boston College, Chestnut Hill, MA where he served for three years.
Father McHugh served as pastor of Saint Thomas More Parish in Durham and Catholic Chaplain at UNH. He then served as associate pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Merrimack while serving as Director of the Diocesan Office of Planning. In October, 1993 he retired from active ministry.
During this lifetime Father McHugh served as President of the Senate of Priests, Diocesan Consultor, Bishop's Liaison to the Council of the Laity and served many terms on the Council of Priests. He also served on the Diocesan Building and Real Estate Board, the "Sunset Committee", and as Priests Council representative to the Diocesan Pastoral Council.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at St. Joseph Cathedral Chapel, 145 Lowell Street, Manchester, New Hampshire. The Rite of Committal was celebrated after the Mass at St. Joseph Cemetery, 448 Donald Street, Bedford, New Hampshire. Go to Lambertfuneralhome.com.
