Francis W. "Sonny" Griffin, 86, of Manchester, passed away on January 17, 2021 at the Elliot Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born on June 29, 1934, the son of Rollin and Catherine (Flaherty) Griffin. He was a graduate of Bishop Bradley High School, class of 1953 and a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph Cathedral where he served as Head Usher for many years.
As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as Grand Knight from 1973 to 1975. On June 29, 2014, His Holiness Pope Francis bestowed an Apostolic Blessing to Francis on the occasion of his 80th birthday.
Francis was a master plumber who owned his own plumbing business until his retirement.
A veteran, he was proud of his service in the US Army Reserves.
Sonny was active in youth athletic programs in the Queen City, coaching baseball in the North Little League for 47 years and CYO basketball at St. Joseph Grammar School where his teams won State titles in 1957 and again in 1963. He was honored with the Carl Lundholm Memorial Award in 1983 and was inducted into the Queen City Hall of Fame in 2003 in recognition of his dedication to the youth of the City of Manchester.
He will be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his sister Barbara Massey and her husband Kenneth of Nashua; his brother, James Griffin and wife Deborah of Epsom, and his brother Robert Griffin of Manchester.
Due to Covid-19, there will be no public calling hours. A graveside service with family and friends invited to attend will take place on Friday, January 22nd at 11 am in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford. A funeral Mass for Francis will be held at a later date.
