Frederick R. Maher

Dr. Frederick R. Maher, 86, of Manchester died November 22, 2010 at a local healthcare facility after a period of declining health.

He was born in Manchester on April 12, 1924, the son of Frederick F. and Germaine (DeRove) Maher. He graduated from Manchester High School Central and St. Anselm College where he was a member of the Red Key Society. He was graduated from Georgetown Medical School in 1951 where he was a member of Phi Chi Medical society. He served his surgical residency at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, MA.

After his sophomore year at St. Anselm's, he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a pilot in the Air Corps for the latter part of WWII.

Dr. Maher served as chief of staff and chief of surgery at the Catholic Medical Center and Sacred Heart Hospital in Manchester as well as Moore General Hospital in Goffstown. He was an incorporator of the Catholic Medical Center and a member of the American Medical Society. He also served on the board of directors of Blue Cross & Blue Shield of NH. He maintained a private practice in the city of Manchester, proudly serving his patients for 40 years as a general surgeon. Dr. Maher took a tremendous amount of pride in taking his medical services directly to his patients, making house calls and establishing deep and meaningful relationships with the families he served.

In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, sailing, playing tennis and taking his motorcycle out for long rides. Above all else, he was a devoted husband and father who cherished the time he spent with his family.

His wife Rita A. (King) Maher predeceased him on November 30, 2005.

Family members include six sons, James R. Maher of Manchester, Brian D. Maher and his wife Marla of Plantation, FL, Michael D. Maher of Manchester, Gregory J. Maher and his wife Denise of Manchester, Martin T. Maher and his wife Kelley of Laconia, and Thomas F. Maher and his wife Lisa of Davie, FL; twelve grandchildren; nephews and nieces.
