Gerald J. "Gerry" Holleran

November 17, 1935 — March 22, 2016

The family of Gerald Holleran announces with great sadness that Gerry, the lad with the shamrock on his lapel, passed away on March 22nd, 2016 after a brief illness. He joins the wide and loving circle of friends and family who have gone before him, including his daughter, Sharon Hilton.
Gerry was born in Manchester on November 17th, 1935 to John J. Holleran and his wife, Beatrice (McQuillen) Holleran, and grew up in The Hollow on Spruce Street. After graduating from Bishop Bradley High School in 1953 and Burdett College in 1959, Gerry began a long and distinguished career that led him from Retail Credit Company, to Equifax, to Haskins & Sells, to several prominent Concord law firms, including Orr & Reno and Rath, Young, Pignatelli & Oyer. Although he was very proud of his career and his accomplishments, he happily retired in 1998 and split his time between homes in Hooksett, NH and Drakes Island, ME.
A proud veteran of the US Army, Gerry served in France during the Korean War. He was active in the Henry J. Sweeney Post Honor Guard, often attending veterans' funerals to pay tribute. Gerry was likewise proud of his Irish heritage and was active in the Ancient Order of Hibernians, having once been selected to serve as Grand Marshal of the Manchester St. Patrick's Day Parade. He was a lifelong fan of the Boston Red Sox and Frank Sinatra.
Gerry is survived by a close and loving family. He leaves his wife of over 50 years, Joan (Enright) Holleran. Together they raised a wonderful family including his son, Jack and Meg Szabo of Manhattan; Jack has three children, Jordan and Reece of Richmond, VA and Jake, also of Manhattan; his son, Peter, and husband Henry Hershkowitz and their twins, Elinor and Oscar, of Manhattan; his son, Sean and his wife Jennifer Pickens Holleran and their daughter Megan of Hooksett; and his daughter, Susan Holleran and her daughters, Cornelia Catherine and Levi McAllister, of Washington, D.C.
The family invites friends to come to calling hours not only to share our sadness but also to share happy memories and to celebrate Gerry's life.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Friday, April 1, 2016 at Holy Rosary Church, Hooksett. Burial with military honors followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Sharon Hilton Memorial Fund at The Therapeutic Riding Program at the University of New Hampshire Equine Center, 278 Mast Road Ext., Durham, NH 03824.
