Helen A. (Viger) Dagenais, 92, of Manchester, died December 14, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born in Newport on April 1, 1926 to Hormidas Viger and Lea (Baillie) Viger Laroche. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Wilfred Laroche.
Helen was devoted to her family. She was giving and will be remembered for her selflessness.
Her family includes two children, Robyn Dagenais Proto and her husband, Atty. Benjamin S. Proto, of Stratford, CT and Rolland E. Descoteau and wife, Lily Deshauteurs, of Lantana, FL; a step-son, Richard Dagenais of New Jersey; three grandchildren, Caroline and Jeremy Proto and Jeffrey Descoteau; three sisters, Lucy Demayo of Claremont, Bernadette Menard of Newport and Jeannine Beliveau of Springfield, MA; two brothers, Real Laroche of Springfield, MA and Reginald Laroche of Las Vegas, NV; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, George J. Dagenais; a son, Wendell A. Descoteau; and six siblings, Claire Bushaw, Ruth Desranleau, Denis Laroche, Armidas Viger, Donald "Butch" Viger and Roger Viger.
Helen worked in the housekeeping department at St. Anselm College for 30 years and had great love and respect for the monks there. She loved doing things for the students, including washing their clothes at her home and ironing when they were in a hurry. She was a second mom and a "Dear Abby" when they needed advice.
She was very active at St. Pius X Church including being the co-founder and treasurer of Senior Hi-Hopes group which provided live dancing for many. She also volunteered at church fairs and was a member of the Women of Mary. She was a member of the Sweeney Post Ladies Auxiliary, a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary Military Order of the Purple Heart, Unit 395, and a member of the Allamande 8's and Queen City Promenaders square dance clubs.
Helen enjoyed treating people to breakfast and lunch, seeing her friends on Saturday nights at Sweeney Post and going to Belmont Hall with her companion, Ralph Tirrell.
She wanted to thank Dr. Joe Horton and his wife, Susan; a very special boss, Dennis Lafond; Jerry and Gisele Carignan who were always there for her; and Ralph Tirrell who always saw that she was loved and cared for. She also wanted to remember Rev. Robert Gorski, Msgr. Anthony Frontiero, Rev. Jason Jalbert, Rev. Adrien Longchamps and Rev. Georges deLaire.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at St. Anselm Abbey Church on the campus of St. Anselm College. Committal prayers followed at Mt. Calvary Mausoleum, 474 Goffstown Rd., Manchester.
