Helen M. Hogan, 89, of Bedford, passed away at her home on May 31, 2016, surrounded by family, after a long illness.
She was born in Bangor, ME on August 1, 1926 to Clyde and Fern (Seabury) Arnold. She was the fifth child in a family of 14. She graduated from Bangor High, class of 1944. She married James A. Hogan, Jr. in Bangor on December 26, 1946 and later moved to Manchester, NH in 1950.
Helen enjoyed skiing, golfing and dancing.
She worked several years at Boynton Street Market prior to opening her own business, J&H Tobacco at 1000 Elm Street, in 1980. She loved her shop. Her meatloaf sandwiches and banana bread were favorites among her customers, most of whom she knew by name.
After retiring in 1995, she enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her family. After her husband passed, she spent winters at her Florida condo where she developed another wonderful group of friends. Her favorite thing to do was to make her famous chocolate chip cookies for her family and friends.
She is survived by four daughters, Carol Lewis and Helen "Toots" Hogan Jr. both of Bedford, Deborah Duhaime of Georgia and Noreen Owens of Stratham; two sons, James Hogan III and his wife, Pamela, of Bedford and Timothy Hogan and his wife, Diane, of Goffstown; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a sister, Glenice Fitzpatrick of Bangor, ME; two brothers, Kenneth Arnold of Germany and Roger Arnold of Maryland; her dear cousin, Polly Jacobs of North Carolina; numerous adoring nieces and nephews across the country; and her beloved companion of 18 years, George Naum of Manchester. One of their favorite activities was to dance at Sweeney Post on Saturday nights, where they were members.
She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years; her parents; six sisters, Frances, Joanne, Trudy, Millie, Linda and Nancy; four brothers, Chester, Harold, Richard and Glen; and her cherished son-in-law, Arnold Lewis.
On her final Mother's Day, she was surrounded by love from all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Helen's family would like to thank all the wonderful hospice nurses and health care aides who were so kind and caring to their beloved mother.
The funeral was private and burial took place at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford.
