Helen May (Bruce) Smith, 85, of Kirkville, NY died Sunday, October 14, 2007 at The Arbors of Bedford in New Hampshire.

She was born in Goodtown, PA, on May 1, 1922, the daughter of Harry and Anna (Koffel) Bruce. She grew up in Binghamton, NY, graduated from Binghamton High School in 1940, Binghamton Business Institute in 1941, and went to work for the War Department in Washington, DC immediately after the start of World War II. After raising her family, she had also worked at Sibley's Department Store during the 1980's.

She was married to Stauffer Smith of Annville, PA on May 1, 1944 and then moved to Central New York where she and Stauffer eventually settled on a rural farm property in Kirkville, NY in 1958. It was a peaceful and quiet rural setting where they raised their family and also where Helen remained and cherished her independent, country living until just recently.

Helen was predeceased by her husband, Stauffer L. Smith in January of 1980 and is survived by three sons and daughter-in-laws, Richard L. and Phyllis Smith of Silver Spring, MD, Edward H. and Candace Smith of Manchester, NH, and Robert W. and Suzanne Smith of Manchester, NH; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Pauline Bugg, Marian Zapotocky, and Anna Fendick.

After private funeral services at the convenience of the family, Helen was placed to rest at Vestal Hills Memorial Park in Vestal, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Madison County Office for the Aging, Inc., C/O Julie Tubbs, 138 Dominick Bruno Boulevard, Canastota, NY, 13032.
