Herbert W. Paul

Herbert W. Paul, 69, of Goffstown died February 4, 2009 in the loving embrace of his wife and children after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Manchester on August 11, 1939, he was the son of Herbert and Helene (Schroeder) Paul.

He graduated from Kimball Union Academy in 1958 and earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of New Hampshire in 1963. He attended the New York School of Design then worked with his father as president and general manager of Herbert W. Paul, Inc., and later founded Decorative Resources Inc. both in Manchester.

He served as president of the board of directors at the Manchester Boys Club from 1974 to 1976. He continued as a director and trustee for many years. He also served as vice president of the New England Council Boys' Club of America.

IN HIS LIFE: Mr. Paul served as president and director of the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and as a councilor for the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences. He was president of the New England Regional Conference of Painting and Decorating Contractors of America. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club and was elected to the Goffstown School Board.

He was a 44 year member of the Pleasant Lake Association.

A sportsman for all seasons, Mr. Paul was a standout football halfback, basketball forward and trackman for Kimball Union Academy. He went on to captain the track team at UNH and was the high scorer on the team competing in the low and high hurdles, high jumps and sprints.

He was an avid reader, skier, tennis player and gardener and enjoyed boating and water sports.

The family includes his wife of 20 years, Lynne M. (Lafond) Paul of Goffstown; two children, Jonathan Herbert Paul and his wife, Jennifer of Weston, MA and Melissa Mary Paul of Arlington, MA; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Paul, Maggie Paul, Matthew Paul, Charlotte Paul and Lily Malora Paul; his mother of Bedford; a sister, Wilma P. Stonestreet and her husband, Don McKenne of West Newton, MA; a brother, W.F. Maxwell Paul of Bedford; five nieces and seven nephews.

The funeral was held Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Brookside Congregational Church, 2013 Elm St., Manchester. Pastor Dawn Berry officiated.
