Sister Irene A. Laberge, CSC (Sr. Mary Agnes of the Sacred Heart), of 969 Chestnut St., Manchester, died January 4, 2002, at her residence, after a sudden illness.
Born in Manchester, February 21, 1930, she was a daughter of Arthur J. and Aurelie (Bouchard) Laberge.
Sister Irene entered the order of the Sisters of Holy Cross in 1949, and made her perpetual vows in 1957. She earned a B.A. degree from Notre Dame College, Manchester in 1963, and an M.A. degree from Seton Hall University, NJ in 1971.
She was a teacher and served at St. Joseph Elementary and later St. Joseph High School, both in North Grosvenordale, Ct.; St. Francis Xavier in Nashua, NH; St. Martin in Somersworth, NH; St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist, both in Attleboro, MA.
She was principal of St. Anthony Elementary School in New Bedford, MA; St. Joseph - St. Thomas Aquinas, in Springfield, MA; and at Holy Infant Jesus in Nashua, NH
Sister Irene returned to Manchester in 1987 and served at Notre Dame College as secretary and later as assistant to the registrar, and until it's closing last year, was a data research specialist.
Family members include 3 sisters, Elaine Laberge of St. Petersburg, FL, Germaine Dandurand of Boynton Beach, FL, and Yvette Roberge of Manchester; 3 brothers, Leo Laberge, Roger Laberge, both of St. Petersburg, FL, and Arthur Laberge of Stuart, FL; many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday January 10, 2003 in the chapel of St. George Manor. Burial followed in St. Augustin Cemetery.
