Londonderry- Irene Frances Murphy, RN, 99, of Manchester died April 3, 2009 at the home of her son.

She was born on February 9, 1910 in Derry, NH, the daughter of Charles A. and Mary Ann (Sullivan) Berry. Her early years were spent in Derry where she was a 1928 graduate of Pinkerton Academy. In 1931 she graduated from the Elliot Hospital School of Nursing where she was later employed as the night supervisor. As a Red Cross Nurse, she served at the Amoskeag Bridge during the Hurricane of 1938.

Irene was a long-time communicant of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard L. Murphy, M.D. in 1989.

Family members include her sons, Richard L. Murphy and his wife Patricia Dooly Murphy of Dunbarton, Dr. David C. Murphy and her good friend Adriana Zulueta of Londonderry; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Anne Murphy, David C. Murphy and Margaret Anne Fellows; six great-grandchildren; several nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Two sisters predeceased her, Mrs. Margaret J. O'Brien and Mrs. Ruth Healy, both of Manchester, as well as her brothers, Charles Eugene Berry of Manchester and Leroy Berry of Long Beach, CA.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, April 6, 2009 in the chapel of St. Joseph Cathedral. Burial followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Murphy Oncology Unit of the Catholic Medical Center, 100 McGregor St., Manchester, NH 03102.
