He was born in Detroit, MI on September 25, 1929 to James and Caroline Barry.
He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a master's degree from Wayne State University in Detroit.
James worked for The Mitre Corporation in Bedford, MA for many years. He was an avid chess player and artist and was a member of the U.S. Chess Federation, the Mitre ROF, the Association of Old Crows and the Currier Museum.
He was predeceased by his wife, Sheila Silverman and is survived by his children James E. Barry Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Danvers, MA, and Pamela S. Schneider and her husband, Thomas, of Fairfax, VA; grandchildren, Bethani and James Barry and Jennifer and Cody Schneider.
He was also predeceased by his first wife, Marguerita Bousquette and is survived by his children, Annette Barry Feldman and her husband, Richard Drager, of Davis, CA, Daniel C. Barry and his wife, Nancy Finkelstein, of Calabasas, CA and Charles F. Barry and his wife, Vicki Shepard, of Santa Clara, CA; grandchildren, Stephanie, Jonathan, Julia, Olivia, Isabel and Alexander; great grandchildren, Theodore and Thea.
He is also survived by sisters, Jane Tate of Ferndale, MI and Carol Leary and her husband, Robert, of Traverse City, MI; his former son in law, Jay Feldman of Davis, CA; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral ceremony was held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., Manchester.
