James V. Broderick

James V. Broderick, 94, of Manchester, died Oct.19, 2018 at Hillsborough County Nursing Home after a period of declining health.
He was born in Boston, MA on Sept. 11,1924 to J.Vincent and Frances (Mahoney) Broderick. He lived in Manchester for most his life and also spent most of his retirement years at his second home in Hampton.
He was predeceased by his daughter Sandra Puzzo in 2016, sisters Joan Broderick and Virginia Lang and her husband Howard, and brother Richard Broderick.
On July 1, 1946 James married Inez (Labrecque) Broderick and they just celebrated their 72nd anniversary together. Their family includes two sons, James V. Broderick III and life partner Margaret Loomis, of Manchester, and Mark Broderick and wife Robin of Hooksett; three grandchildren, Sara Puzzo, Zachary Broderick and Maxwell Broderick; a sister, Louise Welch and husband William; a son-in-law Anthony Puzzo; a sister-in-law Mrs. Ruth Broderick; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
James graduated from St. Joseph H.S. in 1942, attended St. Anselms college and received his law degree from New England School of Law in 1950 and was admitted to the N.H. Bar Assoc. in 1951. He began practicing law alongside his father, J. Vincent, at the law firm originally started by his grand-uncle back in the late 1800's. The Honorable Martin F. Laughlin joined Jim in the law practice up until Marty was appointed to the Superior court.
Jim was appointed Special Justice of the Manchester District Court in 1965 by former NH Governor John W. King. Jim was past President of the Manchester Bar Association; a fellow of the NH Bar Foundation; a member of the American Judges Assoc.,The National Council of Juvenile Court Judges and Municipal Judges Assoc. and past Director of the American Cancer Society. He was awarded life membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars in consideration for legal services dedicated in behalf of the association over the years. James was honored at the Deans reception of New England School of Law at the JFK Memorial Library, Boston, in recognition of his long and distinguished career as a member of the Bar and Judiciary.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-45. He was attached to the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto where he served as a turret gunner with Torpedo Squadron 49. His plane was shot down into the Pacific on a strike against Japanese aircraft and he and crew were rescued by an American destroyer. His carrier was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations and James was awarded four Air Medals (Gold Stars) as well as other citations.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful staff at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home for the compassionate care given to "THE JUDGE".
A memorial service was held on Friday, November 2, 2018 in the chapel at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, Manchester.
