He was born in Manchester on October 21, 1917 to Ernest and Hannah (O'Brien) Gilbert. He lived in Manchester and Hooksett for many years and more recently at Hanover Hill Nursing Home.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator with Manchester Sand & Gravel in Hooksett for over 35 years and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 98.
The family includes two daughters, Frances DesGrosseilliers and her husband, William, of Merrimack and Muriel Gable of Manchester; three sons, James C. Gilbert and his wife, Madeleine, William L. Gilbert and John J. "Jack" Gilbert and his wife, Janet, all of Manchester; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; a close friend, Ruth Soucy of Manchester and her children, Kathleen Soucy and Andy Soucy.
He was predeceased by two brothers, William Gilbert and Maurice Gilbert; a son, George B. Gilbert; and a grandson, Ronald Gable.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at St. Anthony Church, 172 Belmont St., Manchester. Committal prayers followed at Mt. Calvary Mausoleum, 474 Goffstown Rd., Manchester.

Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester assisted the family with arrangements.
