James Andrew Statires, 88, passed away on June 30, 2015, after a short illness. He was born in Manchester to Andrew and Evangeline (Papanastasiou) Statires, and was raised and educated in Manchester.
His loving wife, Glikeria (Kiko) Theodosopoulos whom he shared 63 terrific years together, died in 2011. He will be remembered as an exceptionally kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
"Papou" as known by his 13 grandchildren, was supportive and proud, as he followed their extensive sports and activities from early years through college. As they became adults, he genuinely encouraged them to become successful in their careers. Additionally, he cherished his time with them during their youth on winter vacations in Hollywood Beach, Fl., and later during the summer months at Hampton Beach. The past two years he has adored and embraced his seven great-grandchildren.
After serving a short stint in the US Navy, James spent his life as a business entrepreneur with his wife Kiko and brother Nick, beginning at the family grocery store "Maple Super Market" in Manchester, to the megaplex business endeavors, Diamond C Market and Seagate Motel & Restaurant, at Hampton Beach.
He was a passionate member of the YMCA of Greater Manchester, for over 60 years. Once summer business was closed, he frequented the "Y" on a daily basis, either running with some of his buddies or attending aerobics class. James was very active within the St. George Greek community throughout his life. In his earlier years he served as president of the AHEPA and on the Board of Directors. He also loved cooking lamb each year at the GLENDI.
He was an avid Boston sports fan of the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and reveled in the eight championships over the last decade.
James leaves behind his children Andrew & Karen Statires, William & Linda Statires, Cynthia & Joseph O'Neil, and Krisy & Clayton Sims. His grandchildren include Jim & Noelle Statires, Scott & Lauren O'Neil, Andrew & Melissa Statires, Kristen Statires, Marissa O'Neil, Stefanie & Gavan Fletcher, Kassandra & Todd Brady, Sarah & Brad Belin, Nick and Bill Statires, Elizabeth, Nick, & Jimmy Sims. His great-grandchildren Charlie, Cooper, Madison, Alexandra, Andrew, Dawson, and Kaila. He leaves behind one brother Nick, in addition to many nieces and nephews.
His brother Charles predeceased him.
His family would like to express their gratitude for the kindness and care given by five wonderful ladies over the past eight months.
The funeral was held on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 650 Hanover St., Manchester. Fr. Michael Wilson officiated. Committal prayers followed at Pine Grove Cemetery, Calef Road, Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the YMCA of Greater Manchester, 30 Mechanic St, Manchester, NH 03101, or to the Anna Theodosopoulos Scholarship Fund, 650 Hanover St., Manchester, NH 03104.
