LTC (Ret) Jane "Jeanie" Johnston, 91, of Manchester died July 9, 2018 after a sudden illness.
Born in Manchester on February 4, 1927, she was the daughter of William and Helen (O'Brien) Johnston. She was raised in Manchester and graduated from St. Joseph High School for Girls, class of 1945. She also graduated from the Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in 1948.
In 1949 she was on the staff of the West Roxbury, MA Veteran's Administration Hospital as an operating room nurse, followed by a year in the same capacity at the VA Medical Center in Manchester.
She joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1951, retiring to Sarasota FL in 1972. She was an active member of the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association.
In addition to many assignments in stateside Army hospitals, she also served in Japan, Korea, Germany, France and Vietnam. In 1963, she was awarded the Legion of Valor Citation by the J. Whiting Friel Society at West Point, NY.
She earned the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star and Meritorious Service Medal.
Jeanie's family would like to thank Lisa Lescatre for the wonderful care she provided during her last years spent living at Bedford Falls.
Members of her family include her surviving siblings, Lily Johnston Peltak of Manchester, Frank Johnston and wife Janice of Manchester, Ronald Johnston and wife Donna of Dedham, MA; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by siblings William "Billy" Johnston, James Johnston, Mary McGuire, Robert Johnston, Helen Fremeau, Richard "Cy" Johnston, and Lenny Johnston.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Friday, July 13, 2018 in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Manchester. Burial with military honors followed in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford.
