She was born in Bedford, NH, on August 10, 1916, the daughter of Ubald and Ida (Paquette) Smith. There, she was educated by the Religious of Jesus Mary at St. Augustin School.
Jeanne had been employed as a stitcher with J.F. McElwain K Factory for many years. At age seventeen, she was selected "Miss McElwain" at the company's frolic and dance contest where, "nearly 3,000 persons thronged the Bedford Grove to witness the event" (Union Leader 1933). Prior to retirement she was cafeteria manager at First NH Bank.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albani (Al) A. Cote in 1978, a bus driver with the Manchester Transit Authority. Jeanne was also predeceased by one son, Donald A. Cote in 1987.
Members of her family include her son, Oblate of Mary Immaculate, Brother Richard P. Cote of Norwich, NY; one daughter, Denise Cote-Hopkins and son-in-law Halstead Hopkins of Taylor, NY; a grandson, Noah Y. Mercier of Manchester, NH; several nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated in St. Marie Church on Friday February 2, 2007. Burial followed in St. Augustin Cemetery, Manchester.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038-1131 or local A.D.A. chapter.
