Jeannette T. Plante

Sr. Jeannette Plante, CSC, 76, of the Sisters of Holy Cross, Manchester, NH died January 26, 2002 at Elliot Hospital, Manchester from injuries received in an auto-pedestrian accident.

Born in North Adams, MA on June 4, 1925, she was the daughter of Joseph and Exilia (Boisjolie) Plante. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Holy Cross in 1944 and pronounced her final vows in 1951.

Sr. Jeannette earned a bachelor's degree from Notre Dame College, Manchester, NH. She then taught at parochial elementary and secondary schools from 1946 to 1967 in Adams, MA and in New Hampshire at Newmarket, Manchester and Nashua.

She earned a master's degree in Classics from Duquesne University in 1968. Since that time she has taught at Notre Dame College as an associate professor of Latin, Mythology and History. She has also been supervisor of secondary social studies student teachers.

Besides her service on college committees, she was actively involved in classical associations. She was awarded the Barlow-Beach Bowl, the highest award bestowed by the Classical Association of New England for the promotion of classics in art, literature and music.

She worked closely with the National Junior-Senior Classical Leagues throughout the country and had been a member of its board since 1960. In 1990, she was given a special recognition book award by the American Classical League, and was presented with the Sears Roebuck Foundation Award for teaching excellence and campus leadership.

Sr. Jeannette served three years as spiritual animator of the Holy Cross Health Care Center, Manchester, NH

The family includes three brothers, George Plante, Eugene Plante and Paul Plante; two sisters, Cecile Sears and Laura Gelinas; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated Wednesday January 30, 2002 in St. Catherine Church, corner of Webster and Hemlock streets, Manchester, NH. Burial was in St. Augustin Cemetery, Manchester, NH

Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St., Manchester, NH was in charge of arrangements.
