He was born on August 27, 1912, the son of John and Bridget (Maher) Coyne. He was a graduate of Manchester High School West class of 1933 B where he lettered in football, basketball , and baseball .
He was a member of the 172nd Field Artillery Regiment of the New Hampshire National Guard and was assigned to General Patton's Third Army in the European Theatre during World War II where he received a Silver Star with the Oak Leaf Cluster of Honor. John later served his country during the Korean War and spent his remaining years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer IV stationed at the New Hampshire National Guard Armory. He retired from his career of military service in 1974 with honors and salutes from friends, family, and brothers of service. John Coyne, while at an older age, had the heart of young man. His hobbies included a round of daily golf at the Interval Country Club as a lifetime charter member, swimming with his grandchildren, playing cards with friends, and assisting those in the community in need. He was a member of the League of One Thousand Men of the Monastery of the Sisters of Precious Blood in Manchester, Henry J. Sweeney Post, American Legion Post 79 and the VFW . He was a server at St. Patrick Church and was a communicant of St. Raphael Parish in Manchester.
Family members include his wife of 51 years, Flore (Gendron) Coyne of Manchester; two children, Verna Perry and Frank Coyne of Manchester; a son-in-law, Bernard J. Perry Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Coyne; four grandchildren, Bridget Puffinburger, Pamela Anderson, BJ Perry III, and PFC Adam Coyne; four great-grandchildren, Ameinda, Dallas, John, and Nikolas; one sister, Eileen (Coyne) Avery; one sister-in-law, Leona Gendron.
He was predeceased by five sisters, Teresa Coyne, Esther Girolimon, Mary Twomey, Anna Coyne, and Agnes Olmes.
A funeral Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in St. Raphael Church. Burial with military honors followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Monastery of the Precious Blood, 700 Bridge St, Manchester, NH 03104.
