He was born in Peabody, MA on October 17, 1952. He was educated in the Peabody school system and also attended Salem State College. After graduation from high school, John enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam Era.
Prior to becoming disabled 10 years ago, he had been employed by Auto Wholesalers. Previously he had been self-employed for many years and also had worked for Bonneville & Sons, State Motors, and Frank Yanco Pontiac.
When healthy, John lived a very active life. He loved to ski, play pool and lift weights. He was a devoted husband, father, and brother who will be missed by all who knew him.
Family members include his wife of 34 years, Joan (Sawyer) McGivern of Manchester; one son, Sean McGivern of Manchester; two brothers, Joseph McGivern of Somersworth, NH and James McGivern of Danvers, MA; two sisters, Mary Valentine of Boxford, MA and Julie Walsh of West Hartford, CT; many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
A service was held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 in the Lambert Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Bruce Sutherland officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Red Cross, 425 Reservoir Avenue, Manchester, NH 03104 or to the NH Food Bank, 700 East Industrial Park Drive, Manchester, NH 03109.
