He was born in New York, NY on April 21, 1941 to John and Marion (Carmody) Schmidt. He earned a bachelor's degree from Canisius College in Buffalo, NY and a master's degree from George Washington University in Washington, DC.
John was a health care administrator at The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, ME for many years. In retirement, he was a dedicated volunteer at the grade school level. He also enjoyed corresponding with family and friends by way of a written letter.
He was an active communicant of St. Catherine Church where he was a member of the Men of St. Joseph. He was also a Granite State Ambassador and a member of the Friends of Stark Park, the American College of Hospital Administrators and the Lions Club.
The family includes his wife of 40 years, Winifred (Van Pell) Schmidt of Manchester, NH; two children, Adam J. Schmidt and his wife, Kristin, of Manchester, NH and Kate Schmidt of New York, NY; three grandchildren, Meghan, Caroline and John Schmidt; three sisters, Mary Corr of North Carolina, Theresa Schmidt of New York and Margaret Bush of Connecticut; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Grace E. Schmidt in 2005.
Through his love of entertaining, hosting and cooking, the extended Schmidt family included many close and lifelong friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at St. Catherine Church, corner of Webster and Hemlock streets, Manchester, NH.
