Joseph P. Conway

July 18, 1925 — March 10, 2008

Joseph P. Conway Sr., 82, of Bedford died peacefully on March 10, 2008, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Manchester on July 18, 1925, he was the son of Anthony and Ellen (O'Malley) Conway. He graduated from West High School in 1943 where he was an outstanding student and five letter varsity athlete. He lived in Manchester for many years before moving to Bedford 43 years ago.

He enlisted in the US Marine Corps during World War II and served three years in the Pacific Theater. He was decorated for his participation in the battle of Okinawa. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.

Mr. Conway later attended the University of New Hampshire and studied Civil Engineering. He retired from Don Wheeler Construction Company of Bedford after 35 years as a construction engineer.

IN HIS LIFE: Joe loved sports and was an avid golfer. He was a founding member of the Intervale Country Club. He also played on several baseball and basketball teams and was highly regarded by his team members. He was a long standing communicant of St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford.

The family includes his wife of 59 years, Alice (McCormack) Conway of Bedford; three children, Cheryl Conway Martin and her husband, Denis of Manchester, Joseph P. Conway Jr. and his wife, Maryse of Bradford, and Michael E. Conway and his wife, Dina of Manchester; six granddaughters whom he loved and adored, Kaitlin Conway, Aryn Conway, Megan Conway, Alexandra Conway, Elizabeth Conway and Chloe Conway; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Anthony, and sisters, Genrose Neilon and Mary Pitula. He will be deeply missed by all.

SERVICES: A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday March 14, 2008 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd., Bedford. Committal prayers with military honors followed in the Shaw Chapel of St. Joseph Cemetery, 448 Donald St., Bedford.
