Joseph F. Smith, 82, of Bedford, died October 6, 2017 at Elliot Hospital after a sudden illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born in New York, NY on November 13, 1934 to the late Joseph and Ida Mae (Wagner) Smith. He lived in Bedford for 40 years and had wintered in Bonita Springs, FL for 15 years.
He graduated from Hofstra University and served in the U.S. Army during the 1950's.
Joe worked as an electrical engineer with Digital Equipment Corporation in Maynard, MA and Merrimack, NH for many years.
He had been an active communicant at St. Elizabeth Seton Church in Bedford and St. Marie Church and St. Catherine Church, both in Manchester. He volunteered with Cursillo, Engaged Encounter and Marriage Encounter. He was also involved with the prison ministry Kairos.
He enjoyed golfing, skiing, traveling and home improvement projects.
The family includes his wife of 55 years, Sheila (Cronin) Smith of Bedford; three children, Donna S. Howard and her husband, David, of Nottingham, Marianne E. Miceli and her husband, Todd, of Park City, UT and Craig J. Smith and his wife, Lori Ann, of Pequannock, NJ; seven grandchildren, Matthew and Kaitlin Howard, Megan, Nathan and Jennifer Miceli and Ryan and Rebecca Lombardi.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 190 Meetinghouse Rd., Bedford. Committal prayers followed at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen.
