She was born in Glen Ridge, NJ on April 15, 1930, the daughter of Jackson Reade and Marjorie Bowers. She was educated in the Montclair, NJ school system and earned her bachelor's degree in English from Mt. Holyoke College in 1952. She also received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT, and did graduate work at Boston University.
Prior to retirement, Julia worked as a freelance artist and writer for many years. She had previously lived in the Portland and Brunswick, ME area for many years before moving closer to her daughter and family in retirement.
She enjoyed painting, writing, traveling and caring for animals, especially cats. In her younger years Julia was an accomplished athlete who excelled at tennis, paddle tennis and skiing. Above all else, she will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and sister who cherished the time spent with her family.
Family members include her daughter Sarah Schwab Ambrogi and husband Benge of Manchester; two sons, Walter Schwab and wife Michiko of Berkeley Heights, NJ, Christopher Schwab and wife Rachel of Lowell, MI; her grandchildren, Nicholas, Emma and Anna Ambrogi, Yuki and Kenzo Schwab, and Noah Schwab; her brother, James Bowers and wife Mary of Chatham, MA; two nephews, Nick Newman of Omaha, NE and Tony Newman of Thailand; one niece, Sarah Newman of Omaha, NE. She was predeceased by her parents, and by her sister Nancy Newman.
A memorial Mass was celebrated on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 7 North Mast St., Goffstown, NH 03045.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Manchester Animal Shelter, 410 Dunbarton Road, Manchester, NH 03102.
