Karen R. Jelley

Karen (Ryan) Jelley, 79, of Bedford, died August 21, 2021 at Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Manchester on December 26, 1941 to Walter and Katherine (Sweeney) Ryan. She held dual citizenship with Ireland as well. She graduated from St. Joseph High School for Girls in Manchester, earned a bachelor's degree from Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett and a master's degree in special education from Rivier College in Nashua.

She lived in many locations throughout the U.S. during her husband's Naval career. She later lived in Manchester and settled in Bedford many years ago. She had also wintered in Naples, FL for many years.

Karen taught English in the Manchester School System at Hillside Junior High School for 30 years and was a member of the Manchester Education Association. She briefly taught in Florida as well. Along with her husband, she had also run an ice cream truck.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed daily lunches at area restaurants, crossword puzzles, traveling and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Another favorite was watching, Judge Judy, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lt. Commander, Bruce H. Jelley, USN, Ret. of Bedford; four children, Darryl B. Jelley of Bedford, Darla B. Jelley of Boston, MA, Commander, Dana B. Reid-Kahara, USCG, Ret. and her husband, Jason, of Arlington, VA and Dina B. Pellerin and her husband, Shane, of Sarasota,FL; five grandchildren, Libby Mai Jelley and Gracy E. Jelley both of Bedford, Dinero Boston Jelley of Boston, MA, Maren G. Reid of Arlington, VA and Zachary P. Parker of San Francisco, CA; and a cousin, Susan Hussey Dolan of Manchester.

SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A cemetery committal service is Friday, October 29, 2021 at 1 p.m. at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army.
